Why Indonesia
Indonesia is growing at a rapid pace, and is the fourth most populous country in the world, with vast cultural and geographic diversity. It has the third largest economy in Asia, and has a current GDP of 6%. Cities such as Bandung (pop. 2.5m) are rapidly urbanizing, and are home to a large, educated and media-savvy middle class. The largest Muslim democracy with a total population of 248 million, Indonesia will soon benefit from the formation of the Asian Economic Community (AEC). Current challenges include the creation of an economy that can employ the growing younger population in wages that can match the rising valuation of the economy.
Principal concerns of the newly elected President Jokowi Widjojo include development of Maritime infrastructure, elevating the urban areas with “Smart City” technology in Communication and Information Technology (CIT), and introduction of new renewable technologies. Indonesia seeks to address higher skill levels in manufacturing, and create industry clusters to compete with other Asian nations to capture high value export goods creation. Career pathways to self-employment in sustainable, and competitive innovative industries are needed, in addition to increasing skills in new technology-infused manufacturing processes. Indonesia is also focused on creating a more transparent business environment, and on transparency in city government. Creative entrepreneurs in Indonesia are looking for social investment in their communities in addition to growing local economies with sustainability and social reinvestment. New business ventures will seek to address regional equity in transportation and goods delivery, utilize energy efficiency, contribute to community development, provide environmental solutions, apply modern lean production techniques, and retain local values.
There are various parallel patterns in urban growth in Java and the East Bay cities of Oakland & Berkeley. Urban centers in Java, such as Bandung, are growing rapidly, with a strong Gross Domestic Product rate of 6% or more, and Bandung is particularly strong in design and engineering, garments and fashion, other areas of interior design and architecture. It is growing as a resort destination for both national and international travelers attracted to its fashion and textile industries and many restaurants and growing galleries. Similarly, Oakland, CA is emerging as a creative city, known for arts, creative digital media, culinary arts and specialty food production, and an emerging tech cluster. Oakland has emerged recently No 3: “Start Up” Cities in the USA (Popular Mechanics, Feb 2015) was named No. 5 Among the Top 10 Cities for Tech Entrepreneurs -(The MoneyTree Report by PricewaterhouseCoopers). Oakland was No. 12 among America's Coolest Cities 2014 (Forbes, August 6, 2014), Oakland is the first Port of Call for Asian imports and exports. Oakland has much to share with many of the second port cities of Java, in maintaining and growing Oakland's competitive advantage relative to the larger ports of LA/Long Beach and Seattle. Oakland is a natural place to start partnership relationships with cities such as Bandung, Yogyakarta, for “maker” media arts and technology, and with Surabaya, as second largest port in Java.
